Frequently Asked Questions – FAQ

Do I need any musical experience to begin lessons? Not at all. Tia welcomes complete beginners of all ages. If you have always wanted to play the flute, now is the perfect time to start.

What age do you teach? Tia teaches students ages 7 and up, through adulthood. It is truly never too late to begin.

Do I need to own a flute before my first lesson? No. Tia can help you find a suitable instrument or rental before or shortly after your first lesson. Just reach out and she will point you in the right direction.

Will I need to know music theory to take lessons? No prior music theory knowledge is required. Music theory is an essential part of learning to play the flute well, and Tia incorporates theory skills directly into every lesson. Students learn theory naturally as part of their musical journey, not as a separate or intimidating subject. Whether you have never seen a piece of sheet music or have some background already, you will be met exactly where you are.

What styles of music will I learn? That depends on you. Tia teaches across a wide range of styles including classical, jazz, and world music. Lessons are tailored to each student’s interests and goals.

What are group lessons like? Group lessons are one of Tia’s favorite ways to teach! In a small group of 2 to 4 students, you will learn flute fundamentals alongside peers, and will be able play duets and trios from early on. Playing ensemble music builds listening skills, confidence, and a deep love of making music together that private lessons simply cannot replicate. It is joyful, communal, and genuinely fun. Group lessons are for children or adults, and are flute only at this time.

Is there a recital requirement? No. Recital opportunities are offered as optional, joyful experiences. There is never any pressure to perform publicly.

How much should I practice as an adult? Even 10 to 15 minutes of focused daily practice makes a real difference. Consistency matters far more than marathon sessions. Tia will help you set realistic practice goals that fit your life and schedule.

How much should my child practice? Even 10 to 15 minutes daily is enough to make steady progress. Tia recommends short, consistent sessions over occasional long ones. The goal is for practice to feel manageable and enjoyable, not like a chore.

What if I need to cancel a lesson? Life happens. For private lessons, just notify Tia at least 24 hours in advance and a makeup lesson will be scheduled. Cancellations with less than 24 hours notice unfortunately cannot be rescheduled. For group lessons, please provide at least 24 hours notice; the group lesson will continue for remaining students regardless of individual cancellations.

Do you offer lessons outside of your regular studio hours? Yes, upon request. Please reach out to discuss your scheduling needs and Tia will do her best to accommodate.
